Final cut
The brief
Tarnside make running kit for people who train alone. They asked for a film with no crowd, no finish line and no voiceover: one runner, one road, and enough heat to make it honest.
The shoot
Three days on a single four-kilometre stretch of road in the Tabernas desert. We ran a tracking vehicle with a crane arm for the wide work and went handheld for everything inside two metres. By noon on day two the tarmac was too hot to kneel on, so the close work moved to dawn and dusk.
The cut
Forty hours of footage came home. Tomasz built eleven string-outs before one of them held, and the ninety-second film is close to that eleventh pass. The shorter edits were planned on set, which is why each one has its own opening shot rather than a trimmed version of the main film.
